Globesity

ongoing project

For a long time malnutrition have been considered the main problem affecting low and middle-income countries, but a new threat so-called Globesity is now looming large in the world. Indeed, for the first time in human history, obesity is more common than undernutrition particularly among poorest population groups.

The causes of this phenomenon must be sought not in the excess of food, but are largely a product of poverty, globalization of processed-food and in the lack of opportunity and access by the poorest population groups, to quality food and adequate medical care. Brazil, South Africa and Mexico are among the countries that are facing this dramatic situation. In Brazil the obesity rate has nearly doubled in the last decades, South Africa is living the biggest nutritional challenges in the world due to a high consumption of junk food and limited access to healthy food, and Mexico, where 50% of the population lives below the poverty line, has one of the highest rate of obesity in the world.

Globesity is a photography project born to documenting this complex phenomenon in contexts where relation between obesity and poverty is particularly striking, and an opportunity to provides a different perspective on important issues such as the impact of  global food system, food insecurity, and obesogenic environment on vulnerable people around the world.

In the current context of economic slowdown, obesity outlines new forms of poverty and social exclusion, particularly making woman and children more vulnerable, undermining their future upward social, economic and political mobility.
